Our StoryLiving Journeys began as a support group for people living with cancer and their families and was started by Dana Zobs, Cheryl Ryan, and Mary Mike Haley. Dana brought the Breast Cancer Fund’s “Peak Hike” to Mt. Crested Butte in 1998, which is a popular event around the U.S. to raise money for breast cancer research and awareness. Although, the Breast Cancer Fund returned some of the money raised back to our community, it was realized that there was a need for more support locally for people suffering from all types of cancer. This is where the idea of the Summit Hike came to life. Cheryl Ryan’s idea to form a support group for cancer came directly from her experiences with inflammatory breast cancer. She saw the need for a support system that dealt directly with the emotional and physical aspects of all types cancer and those affected by the disease. Cheryl foresaw the need for much more than group meetings. Cheryl envisioned activities such as the summit hike and a retreat center for emotional wellness and physical health. Cheryl named the support group Living Journeys because she believed that life is a journey. Although she was diagnosed with a terminal illness, Cheryl did not think of herself as a victim but as a person living with cancer. During her four year journey with this illness, Cheryl inspired everyone with her courage and determination. So, it is in Cheryl’s spirit that we are honored to present to you, Living Journeys, a non-profit organization, providing financial and emotional support, education and awareness to Gunnison Valley residents living with cancer and their loved ones. |
